About the conference

Scope

HAZARDS2026 addresses the full hazard-risk lifecycle: identification, zonation and mapping, monitoring and early warning, mitigation and engineering or organisational controls, preparedness and training, emergency response, recovery, learning and long-term resilience.

The conference spans natural, technological and socio-technical/man-made hazards, with emphasis on interoperable data and models, uncertainty-aware decision support, equitable risk communication and practical knowledge transfer for communities, cities and critical infrastructure.

Contributions are welcome from civil protection, disaster risk reduction, structural and infrastructure engineering, urban planning, environmental sciences, process safety, cyber-physical resilience, public health, insurance, governance, education and related fields.

HAZARDS2026 is one of the three interlocking ICDTDE2026 events, designed to foster cross-pollination of methods, standards, data-driven tools and real-world impact across engineering, safety and resilience.

The conference promotes risk-informed and resilience-oriented practice, linking scientific evidence, digital modelling, operational preparedness and policy implementation.

Indicative hazard domains include, but are not limited to:

  • Geophysical: earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis, landslides, sinkholes.
  • Hydro-meteorological & climate: floods, storm surge, cyclones, severe convection, heatwaves, droughts.
  • Wildland & environmental: wildfires, dust storms, coastal erosion, desertification, harmful algal blooms.
  • Technological & industrial: chemical releases, explosions, industrial fires, radiological/nuclear incidents, tailings dam or pipeline failures, oil spills.
  • Infrastructure & built environment: structural collapse, tunnel/metro incidents, and utility outages affecting power, gas, water or ICT systems.
  • Transportation: aviation, rail, maritime and road accidents, including hazmat transport risks.
  • Security-related: terrorism/explosive effects, arson, sabotage, insider threats and critical-infrastructure protection, addressed at programme, policy and practice level.
  • Cyber-physical & emerging: cyberattacks on safety-critical systems, AI/automation failure modes and misinformation impacts on emergency response.
  • Biological & public health: epidemics, pandemics, zoonoses and antimicrobial-resistance events.
  • Space & rare events: space weather, geomagnetic storms, satellite and space-debris hazards.

Conference Tracks

Six focused tracks are proposed for HAZARDS2026:

1. Technological & Industrial Hazards

Process safety, CBRN risk, HAZID, bow-tie/QRA/LOPA, consequence and plume modelling, siting, land-use planning, barrier management, Seveso/COMAH compliance, drills and learning systems.

Indicative sessions: BLEVEs and cascading failures; radiological dispersion modelling; tailings dam safety analytics.

2. Infrastructure, Urban Systems & Built Environment

Risk assessment for buildings, bridges and tunnels, retrofit and redundancy design, lifeline interdependencies, crowd risk and egress, and blue-green infrastructure for flood mitigation.

Indicative sessions: progressive collapse simulation; crowd-crush prevention; district-scale resilience metrics.

3. Cyber-Physical Resilience & Security

Threat modelling for OT/ICS/SCADA, cyber-induced physical consequences, grid, hospital and plant resilience, secure-by-design safety systems and crisis communications under information attacks.

Indicative sessions: red-teaming early-warning systems; ransomware in water utilities; AI guardrails for emergency operations.

4. Hydro-Meteorological, Climate & Environmental Hazards

Forecasting and nowcasting, compound events, coastal and riverine flood modelling, drought planning, wildfire/WUI strategies, ecosystem protection and health co-benefits.

Indicative sessions: multi-hazard early warning; coastal surge and pluvial convergence; smoke exposure risk.

5. Geophysical & Extreme Events

Seismic hazard models, multi-fault rupture, volcanic ash dispersion, tsunami evacuation modelling, landslide susceptibility and cascading hazard sequences.

Indicative sessions: rapid post-earthquake assessment; probabilistic tsunami zonation; remote sensing for slope stability.

6. Preparedness, Response, Recovery & Risk Communication

Training and exercises, incident-command good practice, inclusive warnings, community engagement, insurance and risk transfer, finance for resilience, post-event forensics and learning loops.

Indicative sessions: siren versus cell-broadcast efficacy; public drills at scale; parametric insurance for cities.

  • Education & Certification: short courses, tabletop exercises and credential tracks.
  • Data & Interoperability: open standards, geospatial/data governance, model validation and uncertainty.
  • Ethics & Equity: vulnerability mapping, accessible alerts and community-led planning.

  • Stage 2 – Presentation: accepted abstracts are scheduled for hybrid presentation during 17–19 December 2026.
  • Stage 3 – Full paper: full-length manuscript submission details will be announced after the proceedings route is finalised.

Conference Venue

National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) – Zografou Campus
Athens, Greece

All technical sessions, keynote lectures and coffee breaks for HAZARDS2026 (part of the ICDTDE2026 cluster) will take place on the National Technical University of Athens campus in Athens.

A detailed campus map, building names and room numbers will be provided closer to the conference dates, together with information on access control and Wi-Fi connectivity.

Getting to NTUA (Zografou Campus)

  • From the airport: International arrivals are typically via Athens International Airport. Participants can reach NTUA Zografou campus by taxi, ride-hailing, private transfer or city transport.
  • From Athens: Regular city transport options are available to Zografou. From Athens city center, taxis are a convenient way to reach the campus.
  • By car: Parking guidance will be communicated with the final venue information.

Recommended Accommodation

Participants are responsible for arranging their own accommodation. Staying in Ilisia or Zografou is recommended for easy access to the NTUA campus. Participants may also stay in Athens city center and commute to the venue.

  • Ilisia & Zografou: recommended for proximity to NTUA and local services.
  • Near NTUA Zografou campus: limited nearby options may be available; early booking is advised.
